Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands – Sustainable Community Plan

PROJECT

DPRA was retained to assist the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) with the development of a Sustainable Community Plan. This project, funded by the Town of NEMI and the Green Municipal Fund, was based on examining the long term sustainability and management of the Town’s economic, cultural, societal and environmental assets.

TASKS + OBJECTIVES

A large component of this plan was creating actions related to diversification of an economy that is currently dependent on summer tourism. DPRA was responsible for background research, conducting key contact interviews, organizing and facilitating community engagement activities and drafting a sustainable community plan, inclusive of a vision, goals, objectives, implementation strategy and performance measures for the Town of NEMI and partners.

SMART SOLUTIONS

The engagement plan included liaison with NEMI’s seasonal residents which form a larger proportion of the total population for NEMI.
